5 tips om je paard koel te houden deze zomer

How to keep your horse cool during summer?

Our tips for optimal heat management in horses

Warm days can make training and daily care for your horse more challenging. Horses regulate heat differently than humans, so supporting them with the right routine is essential.

Keeping your horse cool during warm weather is essential for their comfort, performance, and recovery. These three steps help you manage heat effectively during training and daily care:

Tip 1: Train in the morning

If you’ve ever tried training with your horse at 3 PM in summer, you already know this...

Morning temperatures are lower, which reduces heat stress during exercise, for both you and your horse. Training early also supports better muscle function and helps your horse maintain consistent energy levels. Whether you’re doing flatwork, conditioning, or going on a hack in nature, morning sessions are the most temperature-friendly option!

Tip 2: Hydrate your horse

Hydration is one of the most important factors in heat regulation. And not only having access to fresh, clean water is important now: make sure to also replenish your horse’s electrolytes.

Horses lose electrolytes through sweat, especially during warm weather or intensive training. Without replenishment, recovery slows and muscle function becomes less efficient.

Electrolytes support:

  • Normal muscle and nerve function
  • Fluid balance
  • Temperature regulation

A well-hydrated horse performs better, recovers faster and stays safer in hot weather. Adding electrolytes to your summer routine is one of the easiest ways to support your horse's well-being.

Tip 3: Shade & shelter in summer for horses

Shade and shelter are just as important as hydration when temperatures rise. Horses cool themselves far more effectively when they have access to natural shade, well‑ventilated stables, or open shelters that allow airflow.

Avoid closing stables during peak heat: keep doors and windows open, use safe barn fans to improve circulation, and make sure your horse always has a cool, shaded place to retreat.

A comfortable environment reduces heat stress before it even begins!

Tip 4: Turnout in summer for horses

Your pasture schedule might also need a summer makeover

Many horses struggle more in the field than during training, especially when insects are bothering them and direct sun might burn on their skin.

Turning out at night or early morning helps your horse stay active without overheating, while reducing midday turnout prevents unnecessary heat exposure.

If your horse stays outside longer, place slow‑feed hay nets in shaded areas and ensure there’s plenty of cool water available. Small adjustments like these make turnout safer and far more comfortable during warm weather.

Tip 5: Efficiently cooling down your horse

A structured cool-down helps your horse release heat and recover after exercise. Cooling products like shampoo, cooling clays or gels can support circulation and reduce residual warmth in muscles and legs.

Refrigerated cooling products provide an immediate temperature-lowering effect on legs and muscles. Especially beneficial after jumping sessions, collected work, or longer rides!

How do I keep my horse cool in the summer?

  • Train in the early morning to reduce heat stress: morning hours are cooler and support safe exercise
  • Hydrate with water and electrolytes so your horse maintains fluid balance, muscle functions, and temperature regulation during warm weather
  • Provide shade and ventilation to help your horse release heat more effectively and prevent heat stress
  • Adjust turnout times by keeping your horse outside at night or early in the morning, and always ensure access to cool drinking water
  • Cool down efficiently after exercise with a structure cooling routine and, if needed, cooling gels or clay to support faster recovery of muscles and legs
