Changing a horse's coat: hair everywhere - but how does it work?

Spring is here and you can probably already tell that your horse is in the middle of a coat change. Hair is flying everywhere - his body is working at full speed. This is a real effort for your horse, which can also put a strain on his immune system. But don't worry: with the right support, you can help him to master the transition from a fluffy winter coat to a shiny summer look!

Why shedding is exhausting for horses

The coat is completely changed twice a year - a real mammoth project for the metabolism! In spring, the thick winter coat has to be shed to make room for the lighter summer coat. This not only requires energy, but also an extra portion of nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and trace elements. The coat change is controlled primarily by the length of daylight: as soon as the days get longer, the body sends the signal to change the coat.

Older or immunocompromised horses in particular often have difficulties with this process. The shedding process can drag on, the coat remains dull or the horse appears tired and lethargic. In such cases, targeted support is particularly important.

Support from within: nutrients that make shedding easier

The right nutrition plays a crucial role when the horse is struggling through the shedding phase. Here's our special selection of feed supplements to help:

Linseed oil from Vitalbix

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it ensures healthy skin and a shiny coat. It can also support the metabolism and have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Orthosal zinc from Navalis Nutraceuticals

Zinc is the be-all and end-all for skin and hair. This preparation provides organically bound zinc, which is particularly well absorbed and can help with flaky skin or a dull coat.

Biotin from Reverdy

As an important building block for keratin, biotin ensures strong hair growth and improves hoof quality at the same time - a real all-rounder!

Practical tips for everyday coat changes

  • Brush, brush, brush! Daily brushing removes loose hair, promotes blood circulation and makes the coat shine faster. Rubber brushes or special coat change brushes are particularly effective.
  • Don't forget protein! High-quality proteins are crucial for healthy hair growth. Alfalfa, soy or brewer's yeast can serve as natural sources of protein.
  • No stress, please! A regular daily routine and a calm environment help to avoid unnecessary stress.
  • Exercise helps! Whether it's a yoyrun in the pasture or relaxed rides - activity boosts the metabolism and speeds up the shedding process.
  • Drinking is important!  Sufficient water supports the metabolic processes and helps the body to remove old hair cells more quickly.

The coat change is a hairy affair every year - literally! However, with the right care, a targeted supply of nutrients and a little patience, this phase can be mastered in a relaxed manner. Then nothing will stand in the way of a shiny summer coat!
