10 tips for horse itching
Tail and mane eczema (better known as sweet itch) is an annoying skin condition in horses. It’s caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva of Culicoides midges. The result? Intense itching, especially around the tail, mane, and belly. Horses may rub themselves raw trying to find relief.
Sweet itch, tail and mane eczema, or summer eczema,... Whatever you call it, it’s painful for your horse and frustrating for you as an owner, because you want to give your horse the best possible support.
With these ten tips, you can help prevent, soothe, and manage the itch:
Tip 1: Preventing is better than curing
Despite what the name suggests, sweet itch isn’t just a summer issue. It starts as soon as the midges become active: often as early as late March or early April. Starting your itch-prevention routine early can make a big difference! So be sure to apply these tips before the season kicks off for the best results.
Tip 2: Let your horse go undercover
The midge that triggers your horse’s allergic reaction is most active at sunrise and sunset. By keeping your horse in the stable during the day and turning them out at night, you avoid the peak times of midge activity.
Or, if you happen to know a pasture with a giant mosquito net draped over it, let us know!
Tip 3: Use fine-mesh fly sheets with neck and belly covers
Regular fly sheets often aren’t enough. The best anti-itch sheets fit snugly and protect the key problem areas: the mane, tail base, and belly button.
Tip 4: Avoid damp, muggy areas around your horse
Midges love damp places with stagnant water or manure buildup. If possible, keep your horse well away from ditches, muck heaps, or puddles.
Tip 5: Wet horse = midge spa
A refreshing rinse on a warm day? Your horse will love it!
But beware: midges are drawn to damp skin. So make sure to dry your horse thoroughly before turning them out again. Your horse deserves that spa feeling, the midges don’t!
Tip 6: Groom and observe
A daily grooming session doesn’t just keep the coat clean, it also helps you spot early signs of itching or wounds before they worsen.
Brushing stimulates blood circulation, supports the removal of toxins, and promotes hair growth.
Plus, your horse will love the extra quality time, and will gladly show you exactly where it itches!
Tip 7: Avoid stress
Stress weakens the immune system (just like in humans). Rest, routine, and plenty of exercise can help strenghten your horse’s body against allergic reactions.
Tip 8: Less sugar, more immunity
Horses with sweet itch often react more sensitively to food high in sugar and starch. Opt for high-fiber, rouchage-rich feed with a low sugar content. This helps limit inflammation and keeps the immune system stable.
Tip 9: Sweet itch logbook
You know your horse better than anyone, and with this tip, you’ll know him even better! By keeping a logbook, you’ll gain insights into what works and what doesn’t.
Note when the first symptoms appear, the steps you take, the weather conditions, and how your horse responds... This way, you’ll learn to better tailor your approach each year, and avoid having to figure out what helps every time.
Tip 10: Support the immune system and healthy skin from the inside
If your horse suffers from sweet itch, you know: every little bit helps. You’ve got your fly sheet is ready, you might be applying ointment every day... You’re on the right track, your horse will surely benefit!
But sometimes, that extra bit is needed to support your horse from the inside out: the immune system plays a big role in how intensely your horse reacts to midge bites.
