Beta-(1,3/1,6)-glucans are extracts from the cell walls of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), known for their immune-stimulating properties. They have been the subject of hundreds of publications demonstrating that beta-glucans induce an enhanced immune response.
The strong immunostimulating effect of baker's yeast beta-glucans is due to their unique molecular structure, which can activate specific receptors on the surface of macrophage cell membranes.
Thus, the activation of macrophages by beta-glucans increases their phagocytic capacity and modulates the production of cytokines involved in both innate (immediate) and adaptive (specific) immunity, thereby contributing to the activation of lymphocytes.
